Dr. Ahmed Albassam has a broad range of professional experience, in the emergency room, and outpatient settings. With over two decades of experience spanning multiple continents, he brings a wealth of knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and clinical expertise to his practice and expertise in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
His previous attending psychiatrist roles include positions at Four Winds Hospital, Buffalo Psychiatric Center, and BronxCare Health System, where he has treated a diverse patient population with compassion and insight.
Dr. Albassam has contributed significantly to psychiatric literature. His co-authored publication, Deep Brain Stimulation in the Treatment of Tardive Dyskinesia (Psychiatric Annals, 2014), explores the application of neuromodulation in severe movement disorders related to long-term antipsychotic use. He has also investigated the long-term psychosocial effects of posterior fossa tumors, co-authoring The Late Psychosocial Complications in Patients with Posterior Fossa Tumor (Medulloblastoma) (Psychiatric Annals, 2013), shedding light on the emotional and cognitive aftermath of these conditions.
In addition to journal articles, Dr. Albassam has presented his research at prestigious international conferences. His psychoanalytic exploration of the psychological underpinnings of extremist behaviors, The Eros, The Thanatos and Suicidal Terrorism, was accepted for presentation at the International Psychoanalytic Association’s 50th Congress in Buenos Aires in 2017. He has also shared insights on the intersection of cultural beliefs and mental health treatment adherence at the 25th European Congress of Psychiatry in Florence, Italy. Other conference presentations include Medication-Induced Myoclonus at the American Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meeting in 2016 and Can Pericallosal Lipoma Increase Personal Vulnerability to Psychotic Symptoms? at the Institute for Psychiatric Services in 2013.
He has completed psychodynamic psychotherapy training at the PANY program at NYU and is a fluent Arabic speaker and certified medical interpreter.
Dr. Albassam earned his medical degree from Baghdad University’s College of Medicine before embarking on a dynamic career that has taken him from residency training in Iraq and Jordan to advanced psychiatry research in the United States. He completed a Family Medicine Resident in Baghdad Medical City. His research experience includes time as a postdoctoral research trainee at The Zucker-Hillside Hospital, affiliated with the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, where he worked under the supervision of Dr. Christoph Correll.
